Software development
A web application, customer portal, or internal tool built around how your business actually works, not around a template.
Software & data engineering · South Africa
We build applications, connect systems, and automate manual workflows, turning the operational problems you are working around into software your team actually uses.

What we do
Most problems we are brought sit across more than one of these.
01
A web application, customer portal, or internal tool built around how your business actually works, not around a template.
02
Connect the systems that do not talk to each other, and build the pipelines that move and prepare the data your team depends on.
03
Cut the repetitive spreadsheet work, re-keyed data, and manual hand-offs that quietly cost your team hours every week.
Already have an engineering team? We also take embedded contract work, joining an existing team to add capacity or fill a specific gap, rather than owning the whole build.
Selected work
Selected work from Brian’s previous engineering roles, alongside the products Rocky Beach owns and operates. Each one says what it was and what Brian personally did.
Commodities
Global commodities trader
Previous employment
A tracking system combining truck checkpoint scans and vessel GPS data across hundreds of trucks and vessels and roughly a dozen ports, replacing the spreadsheets the operation had been run on.
Brian owned system design and project management, working with contracted engineers who implemented the software.
Applied AI
Prediction markets
Previous employment
A platform where users could build AI agents for prediction markets: data pipelines, backend engines, interface, and the deployment workflow behind it.
Built by Brian end to end.
Education
Independent teaching business
Own project
A teaching-content tool that produces notes, worksheets, tests, memos, and books from a single source.
Built by Brian end to end. Saves several hours of preparation each week for the teacher whose business runs on it.
Products in the wild
Not concept screens or pitch-deck promises. These are live products we own, operate, and keep improving, built and run to the standard we hold our work to.
Healthcare · Owned product
0129 calculators
Clinical calculators for everyday practice.
Referenced calculators and guided work-ups, designed for doctors on a phone. Offline, no sign-up, and no patient data stored.

Education · Owned product
02Runs a live teaching business
The platform a teaching business runs on.
Two sides of one system. Students read notes, work through tasks and weekly challenges, and book lessons. The teacher side builds the material behind them, with a full in-browser PDF viewer and editor, so content is authored and delivered without leaving the app.

Heavy machinery · Owned product
03Live in 1 month
A marketplace built to move heavy machinery.
Listings, search, and a practical admin for South African dealers. A complete working marketplace, taken from an open gap to live product.

Recognise your own problem in any of this? That is usually the best place to start a conversation.
Discuss your projectWho you work with
Rocky Beach is led by Brian de Klerk, a software and data engineer with six years of experience across commodities, logistics, and digital products. Brian leads technical direction and delivery, bringing in additional specialists as the scope requires.
That means you always know who is accountable for the work. On a larger build the team grows around the project, but the person who scoped it with you is the same person answerable for what gets shipped.
How we work
Good software starts with judgement, not a technology shopping list. Our process stays close to the problem and ends with something real.
01
We shape the system before we shape the screens, so effort goes into the part that changes the outcome.
02
Interface, backend, data, and delivery. One joined-up build instead of a collection of hand-offs.
03
AI is part of how we work. It enters the product only when it makes the experience genuinely better.
04
A launch is the start of the feedback loop. We maintain, learn, and make the useful thing more useful.
Start here
Send a short description of the project, or the process that is slowing your team down. You do not need a technical specification to start a conversation, and if we are not the right fit, we will say so.
First
A short conversation about the problem. No specification needed.
Then
We agree the scope, the shape of the build, and what it costs.
From there
You get a named person accountable for delivery, and working software you can see progress in.
